From Our Headmaster
It is my great pleasure and privilege to announce the opening of Thomas Edison School of Fairfax, a private primary GT school and the home of the Bumble Bees!
Thomas Edison School of Fairfax opens its doors with the clear objective of providing unique classes and learning experiences, particularly catering to gifted and talented children. At Thomas Edison School of Fairfax, a fully accredited private school recognized by Cognia (formerly known as AdvancEd), we believe children should begin developing their emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual capacity from an early age. We believe that from the beginning of their education, gifted children should be offered optimized instruction through a structured model. Our position is that this ideal can only be reached if their skills are identified early on, and that this is important not only for academic growth, but to instill a love of learning.
Academically, we will offer advanced curriculum courses, designed and developed in partnership with College of William and Mary’s Center for Gifted Education, with an emphasis in problem-based learning. In addition to core subjects, students will be given Spanish language instruction starting in kindergarten, PE courses which include swimming and yoga, and music instruction to encourage students’ development as well-rounded individuals. Our students will be given thorough evaluations, going beyond a simple A, B, C grading scale. In addition to letter grades, the school’s teachers give narrative evaluations of student performance, in which they are responsible for carefully considering their students' work and growth.
Thomas Edison School of Fairfax will also provide ample opportunity for parent involvement. Through the Parent Teacher Association, business partnerships, Family Movie Night, and Morning Assembly (where all students begin the day with singing, being read to, yoga, and a brief silent reflection time), our parents will be encouraged to actively participate in and contribute to children’s growth. The school also has special activities, such as monthly Humanities Assemblies, which expose students to a wide scope of cultures, as well as educating them about important historical events and multicultural holidays. We wish to cultivate a sense of community that encourages cooperation, creativity, empathy, integrity, and mutual respect that moves beyond tolerance.
We value individual learning styles and provide exposure to a variety of learning settings that include large and small group lessons, to involve both independent and collaborative tasks for our students. We seek to incorporate the vast web of resources in our community and engage our students in a variety of learning experiences, developing both the depth of their understanding and the breadth of their perspectives.
Knowing that “giftedness” takes many forms, we are eager to discover the creative ways we can work together with you to build this new community for bright thinkers. With an open-minded, research-driven approach that incorporates personalized education for every aspect of the individual child, the Thomas Edison School of Fairfax creates an environment where students reach the highest standards while becoming their truest selves. We look forward to embarking on this journey with you!
